Candice Breitz: Extra!

Candice Breitz: Extra! marks the first major showcase of her work in South Africa. This follows exhibitions that have highlighted South African icons such as Alexis Oreller, Walter Battiss, and Gerard Sekoto; celebrated modern-day notables like Marlene Dumas, Willem Boshoff, and Peter Clarke; and supported the ascendant talents of Churchhill Madikada, Nontsikelelo Veleko, and Nandhipa Mntambo. Breitz's work is compelling and boundary-pushing, focusing on the usage of modern technologies while exploring TV shows, films, and music videos. By selecting snippets from these, she crafts complex, often-conflicting scenarios that challenge identity and our preconceived prejudices. To move forward in harmony, we must first confront our troubled past; Extra, filmed on the set of the popular South African soap opera Generations, poignantly does this.
